Let’s take a look at the ICC World Cup 2023: ICC New Rules – What Happens If Rain Comes and Match is Called Off?
At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, England played New Zealand in the opening match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. During the ongoing mega event, teams will play a total of nine matches against each other in a round-robin format. The four teams with the most points will advance to the semi-finals.
It is expected that all the teams will play 9 matches each, and they will need to win at least 7 of them to keep themselves in a position to survive, since rain will also play an important role as in the previous practice games.
When it rains and the match is called off, what happens?
If a game is abandoned due to rain, qualification will depend on the net run rate of the team. All teams participating in the World Cup need to ensure they not only win the matches but also win by a good margin. The ICC has outlined guidelines regarding the minimum length of the boundary line at 70 meters. To avoid dew, curators have also been advised to use more grass to prepare the tracks.
If the game ends in a draw in the Super Over, the teams will continue to play until a winner is determined according to ICC New Rules.
ICC’s second newly introduced rule eliminates the soft signal, since the on-field umpire now has the initial decision before consulting the third umpire. The on-field umpire’s decision stood if the third umpire could not find conclusive evidence to overrule his decision.
Team India, led by Rohit Sharma, will take on five-time champions Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on October 8 in their first match.
