On Aug. 3, more than 1,000 athletes and coaches representing 70 countries will gather on Lake Banook for five days of canoe and kayak competitions, with a total of 32 different finals raced in 200-metre, 500-metre, 1000-metre and 5000-metre distances.
“This will be the largest festival this summer and the largest party on Lake Banook,” says Tim Rissesco, executive director of the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission. “This will be the first time we have held the championship since 2009, and it was the defining week of the summer.”
“This is the first time we are connecting the paracanoe events and the canoe events,” says Rissesco. “That’s a huge thing. We want to build a competition that is completely accessible. We don’t want to block any participation, and that’s a priority.”
